Sligo Town received a major blow recently with the release of the results of 2007 litter league survey by the Irish Business Against Litter, with Sligo dropping to the bottom position, earning itself the unenviable title "The Dirtiest Town in Ireland".

The survey, carried out by An Taisce revealed that Sligo had the highest number of litter blackspots, with litter evident on approach roads and the town centre's streets, most of which was brought about by fast food wrappings and alcohol related packaging.

Sligo has consistently scored a less than satisfactory result in the litter league surveys over the past number of years, but the latest results are the worst ever.

Mayor of Sligo - Councillor Jonathan McGoldrick said "I really couldn't accept what they are saying about Sligo, in fact I would go to the extent of saying that its as far from the truth as possible. We keep Sligo clean and well presented"

Dr Tom Cavanagh - Chairman of the Irish Business Against Litter said "managing litter is a job 365 days a year, it is however disappointing that some towns continuously tackle litter and keep their town and approach roads clean and others make no extra effort to consistently keep litter from their streets"

"We are pleased with the overall improvement in litter levels since the beginnings of our Anti litter league survey in 2002. Ireland is now almost as clean as its European counterparts"
