A €70 MILLION development in the Wine Street car park, has finally been given the go-ahead.

The major shopping and residential development, along with separate re-developments of Dunnes Stores and the Adelaide Bar block, which was first mooted seven years ago, is set to transform the centre of Sligo Town.

The development by Treasury Holdings, which is expected to get under way as next summer, will comprise 25 shop units, 28 apartments and a 430-space multi-storey car park.

The apartments will be located in two eight and nine storey blocks located adjacent to the Dunnes Stores branch in Adelaide Street.

Senior development manager Niall Kavanagh said: “We appreciate that the construction process will take a number of years and as such we want to ensure that the work involved will have as little impact as possible on the working and daily lives of the people of Sligo.

“We will make every effort to ensure that sufficient temporary car parking will be provided for this period, and that the development will be phased in such a way as to have a minimum effect on existing businesses in the town centre.”

Welcoming the planning permission, Mr Kavanagh said: “We are delighted with this week’s news from Sligo Borough Council, after a number of years of consultation with the local authority and local stakeholders it appears Sligo is finally going to get the badly needed redevelopment of its town centre”.

The development will sit in a modern new urban plaza, while a series of new urban streets will be created to link the centre with the existing DunnesPenneys and Tesco stores all of which are due for redevelopment.

Conor Ronan, Treasury Holdings local partner in Sligo, said: “Everyone in Sligo realises the importance of this development and Treasury will aim to attract top-class national and international retailers to the scheme which will ensure Sligo Town Centre becomes the retail destination of choice for the people of the North-West of Ireland.
