Do you remember “The Bomb” which stood outside the DNG Estate Agents at the bottom of O’Connell Street, opposite The Post Office.

“The Bomb” is thought to have been a ship’s buoy or something similar, NOT an unexploded land-mine which was found nearby when the road was being resurfaced, though that would have conjured up many a sinister thought when you told the grandchildren.

I was told once, many years ago, that “The Bomb” had something to do with the wreck of The Lusitania, though I also dismiss this as sensationalism.

“The “bomb” was often called “The Clerys Clock of Sligo”, You could arrange to meet someone by “The Bomb” at a given time, that was back in the days when we had no mobile phones.

But where is it now?

The photo (above) was reportedly taken in the mid 1980’s during the running stage of an All Ireland Triathlon event which went from Strandhill to Rosses Point via Sligo Town, the two guys running with their backs to the camera, are actually triathletes taking part in the event.
